Gcoder Free Tier Sunset: Why We're Making This Change
Effective: April 25th, 2026 at 12:00 PM Belize Time
Today, I'm announcing a significant change to Gcoder, the VS Code extension that connects to BytArch.com's API for AI-powered coding assistance. As of midday today (12:00 PM Belize Time), free user access to Gcoder will be discontinued.
This wasn't an easy decision, but it's a necessary one.
What Is Gcoder?
For those unfamiliar, Gcoder is a VS Code extension I built that leverages the BytArch.com API to bring powerful AI coding capabilities directly into your development environment. As both the developer of Gcoder and the owner of BytArch.com, I've been deeply invested in maintaining a tool that helps developers write better code faster.
Why We're Removing Free Access
The decision comes down to two key factors:
1. Explosive Popularity
Gcoder has grown far beyond what I initially anticipated. The user base has expanded rapidly, which is incredible to see—but with that growth comes infrastructure challenges I need to address head-on.
2. Abuse of the Service
More critically, the free tier has become a target for abuse. Bad actors have exploited the open access in ways that strain our systems, degrade performance for legitimate users, and make it unsustainable to continue offering the service without proper boundaries.
What This Means for You
If you're currently using Gcoder on the free tier, access will cease at 12:00 PM Belize Time today. To continue using Gcoder beyond that point, you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan.
The Upside: A Better Experience for Everyone
This change isn't just about cutting costs—it's about investing in quality. By removing the free tier, we can:
- Keep servers clean and optimized — No more resource drain from abuse or excessive load
- Maintain the latest models — Access to cutting-edge AI models requires significant compute resources. A sustainable model means we can keep Gcoder on the bleeding edge
- Deliver faster inference — With controlled, paid access, we can guarantee the low-latency responses that make AI-assisted coding actually useful
In short: paying users will get a faster, more reliable, and more powerful tool.
Moving Forward
I believe in building tools that developers love, and I believe in doing it sustainably. This change ensures Gcoder remains a high-quality, dependable extension for the professionals who rely on it.
If you have questions about transitioning to a paid plan or need assistance, feel free to reach out.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Gcoder and BytArch.com along the way. Here's to building better tools together.
